Discovery Program:

The National Institute for Learning Disabilities was founded upon the biblical worldview that affirms each individual was created in the image of God and therefore has innate potential to learn and become effective in service to the world.

NILD Position Statement

The National Institute for Learning Disabilities developed a unique program that uses a variety of integrated techniques and interactive questioning to build areas of weakness for students on an individual basis. The blend of techniques encourages students to combine various perceptual and cognitive skills in order to promote more efficient neurological pathways.

The Discovery with Friends program was adopted by Seattle Lutheran High School in order to provide an opportunity for students who have been identified as having academic and processing difficulties to develop the skills of independent learning inside and outside of the classroom. With the Discovery with Friends program in place, the needs of individual students are addressed in a Christ-centered environment. Discovery is designed to help our students gain confidence as learners through daily success in therapy. Hope begins to arise as they begin to realize that they can overcome their learning difficulties. In learning to explain and refine their thinking processes, our students experience the integrity that comes from truly knowing their own viewpoint. Each of these aspects combines to encourage each student to develop their own unique strengths and passions as they become free to make choices that reflect their highest calling.

Discovery with Friends: Program Specifics

Discovery with Friends is a non-tutorial program that works with students who have diagnosed learning difficulties. Therapy is conducted in a one-on-one situation for three 52 minute sessions each week. This time is focused on intensive intervention delivered in a clinical, individualized setting, utilizing interactive dialog to stimulate academic functioning.

The program requires a minimum 3 year commitment and its emphasis is on developing the skills necessary for learning and to enable the student to learn independently.

A variety of techniques will be used to build the student’s academic and perceptual deficit areas and will integrate the use of perceptual and cognitive skills within the context of reading, writing, spelling and math.
