Sounder Treble- by JT Gallant

Sounder Treble?
In the midst of the panic caused by the Seahawks’ 3-3 start to the 2014 NFL season, many people have missed the potentially historic success Centurylink Field’s other team has achieved so far this year. The Sounders, Seattle’s professional soccer team who compete in MLS (Major League Soccer), are currently on the brink of history. After winning the U.S. Open Cup
for the fourth time in six years, the Sounders then proceeded to win the Supporters Shield, given to the team with the most points at the end of the season. The Sounders are poised to make a deep playoff run this year, something they haven’t achieved since entering the league in 2008. After five straight early exits from the playoffs, the Sounders faithful are hopeful that this will be the year that the Sounders finally exorcise the demons that have plagued them come the postseason.

With a roster stocked with players such as Clint Dempsey (the U.S. National team captain), Obafemi Martins (who leads the team in both goals and assists), and Deandre Yedlin (who is set to transfer to Tottenham of the English Premier League at the conclusion of
the Sounders’ season after a breakout World Cup performance), the Sounders are poised to finally lift the MLS Cup for the first time. If they do manage to do so, they will have won the U.S. Open Cup, the MLS Supporters Shield, and the MLS Cup in the same season, becoming the first club to achieve this feat, which has become known as the treble. As a fan, it has been a fun year for the Sounders, who have once again set records for attendance in MLS, but the team is well aware that their supporters are expecting to be repaid for the loyalty with a championship!
