Voices and Choices
I just read this story a few months ago and I thought it was really impactful. It’s called “The Wolf inside Me.”
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
Statistics say that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. So voices affect our choices. We make decisions every day. The decisions and the choices we make can be hard sometimes. Last week during Mental Health Day, it was awesome to see students connecting and engaging in conversation. Community and mentorship is a key for us at Seattle Lutheran. Jesus calls us to love and serve and sometimes that can be to just sit and listen. I’m so blessed to work with people, young and old with wisdom and humility to learn and grow every day.
